Supreme Court Agrees to Hear Challenge to Agency Fees
June 29, 2015
ALERT TO ALL PUBLIC-SECTOR UNIONS:
Today the U.S. Supreme Court announced that it had granted certiorari in the case of Friedrich v. California Teachers Association. In that case, the Court will reconsider the precedent established nearly 40 years ago in Abood v. Detroit Board of Education allowing public sector unions to collect “agency fees” from employees represented by a union who do not wish to join the union. As the Court’s decision could have wide-ranging impacts, we will be following this matter closely and will keep our clients apprised of developments as they occur. A decision in the case is expected in or before June 2016.
