Vermont Adjuncts Take Action, Vote to Join Together and SEIU At Three Colleges
In the past week, adjuncts at St. Michael's, Burlington, and Champlain Colleges voted overwhelmingly to join the growing Adjunct Action movement fostered by SEIU. Attorney Patrick Bryant represented SEIU before the National Labor Relations Board.
On November 24, the NLRB's Boston office verified 80 percent of Champlain College adjuncts and 85 percent of Burlington College adjuncts elected to have SEIU help them have a voice in improving their wages, benefits, and other terms of employment.
Yesterday, the NLRB verified a strong majority of adjuncts at St. Michael's College also voted to unionize in the face of strong opposition by the employer.
Jonathan Auyer, who teaches at Burlington College, stated at the Adjunct Action web site: “The campaign aimed at highlighting the need for sustainable pay, access to benefits and stable working conditions for the adjunct faculty, and this vote is one step on the path to making these things happen. I really am excited to work with the administration, my fellow adjuncts and the full-time faculty in the hopes of continuing to better Burlington College by bettering the teaching conditions, which will undoubtedly result in bettering the learning conditions for our students.”
