Jillian M. Ryan

Jillian graduated from Northeastern University School of Law in 2011, where she took numerous advanced courses in labor and employment law as well as a variety of practical application courses to fine tune her skills in arbitration and litigation arising from workplace disputes. Jillian was an active member of the Northeastern Employment & Labor Law Association and the Alternative Dispute Resolution Society’s Mock Mediation Team.

During her tenure at NUSL, Jillian worked as a judicial intern for the Honorable Leo T. Sorokin, Magistrate Judge of the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts. Jillian also worked as a legal intern for both the Massachusetts Department of Labor Relations and Pyle Rome Ehrenberg.

In the summer of 2010, Jillian was awarded a prestigious fellowship by the Peggy Browning Fund, a nonprofit corporation established in the memory of Margaret A. Browning, a prominent labor attorney and member of the National Labor Relations Board. As a Peggy Browning Fellow, Jillian gained invaluable experience as a legal intern at Schwarzwald McNair & Fusco LLP, a prominent union-side labor law firm in Cleveland, Ohio.

Prior to going to law school, Jillian lived and worked in Osaka, Japan as a junior high school English teacher for two years. Following her return to the United States, she worked as a paraprofessional in a local middle school. In this environment, Jillian witnessed firsthand the changing face of labor relations and the challenges this presented to public education. Inspired by her experience, Jillian embarked on an in-depth independent research project during her second and third years of law school in which she studied the history and current status of the debate about the effect of teachers’ unions on the quality of public education.
